Lake Charles Second Grader Is 100,000th Student Using Book Adventure as a Reading Resource

October 13, 2000, Baltimore, Md. -- BookAdventure.org, the free online reading incentive program that encourages children to read, announced today that the 100,000th school student to register for the program is Heather Bell, a second grade student at the Rosa Fondel Elementary School in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

In recognition of having the 100,000th student using Book Adventure in a classroom, Heather’s entire class will receive prize packages from the Book Adventure Foundation on October 18 at 9am at Rosa Fondel Elementary School. A Book Adventure representative will present the prizes. Media are invited to attend.

Peggy Blanchard, Heather’s teacher, uses Book Adventure as a supplement to her classroom reading program.

“I love using the Book Adventure site,” said Ms. Blanchard. “It’s a great way to encourage my students to read. The quizzes help them with their reading comprehension, and they love the chance to win prizes just for reading! It’s a wonderful program.”

Book Adventure is the first Web-based, nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to motivating children to read using a technology platform. Students can access the site and use it to create personalized book lists, take quizzes on the books they’ve read, and win prizes by completing the quizzes. Parents and teachers can use the site to track a student’s progress in reading, as well as using it to link to online reading resources and reading tools.

“We created Book Adventure in response to the staggering number of children who were reading below grade level,” explained Kelly Hodge-Williams, Executive Director of The Book Adventure Foundation. “The site allows children to have an interactive, fun experience with reading, while allowing parents and teachers to monitor their progress.”

BookAdventure.org is a free online reading incentive program that uses technology and incentives to motivate children (grades K-8) to read. Book Adventure allows kids to create personalized books lists from over 4,000 titles, take quizzes on the books on their lists, and earn prizes for reading. Book Adventure currently has more than 315,000 registered users, with more than 29,000 classrooms using the site as a reading resource. Children have taken more than 1.44 million quizzes since the site was established in April 1999.To sign up for Book Adventure, students, parents and teachers can log onto the site at www.bookadventure.org.
