Online Reading Incentive Program Hosts 2nd National Book Bonanza Contest to Motivate Student Readers
Delta Airlines, Hilton, Hertz Contribute to Send Winners to the Nation's Capital
March 17, 2000 - Book Adventure, http://www.bookadventure.org, a free online reading incentive program with over 185,000 registered users, is kicking off its 2nd National Book Bonanza contest on Monday, March 20th to motivate students to read. The Book Bonanza contest is designed to generate more enthusiasm about reading by adding to the arsenal of Book Adventure prizes used to reward students for their literary success.
At http://www.bookadventure.org, children (K-8) create personalized book lists from over 4,000 recommended titles, take quizzes on the books they've read at school or at home and earn prizes for understanding the books they've read. Book Adventure is a non-profit initiative initially funded by the Sylvan Learning Foundation and currently supported by Barnes & Noble.com, Houghton Mifflin, Sylvan Learning Centers, R.R. Bowker & Lycos Zone. The program is designed to motivate students to read more often, for longer periods of time and with greater understanding. Currently, students can redeem points for prizes including gift certificates and engaging downloadable activities.
Students currently enrolled on the site, as well as new Book Adventure readers, can register at http://www.bookadventure.org to participate in the Book Bonanza II contest.
The first 14 students who get perfect quiz-scores on the most books at or above their grade will win the spectacular Book Bonanza II prizes. Two grand-prize winners and up to three of their family members will be on their way to the Nation's Capital. From the Washington Monument to the White House and Capital Children's Museum to the Smithsonian Museum, Book Bonanza II winners will be treated to a four day grand tour of Washington, DC. Delta Airlines, Hilton Hotels, Hertz Rent-a-Car, Rainforest Cafˇ and Fuddruckers generously contributed to the grand-prize package.
Four second-place winners will receive $500 gift certificates towards a "Techie/Trecky" prize (a computer or a bicycle), and eight third-place winners will receive an "Edutainment Fun Pack" made possible by General Cinema's Summer Kids' Series, Crayola Fun, Patch Products, Inc. and Barnes & Noble.com.
The contest, which runs through May 12th, will be open to any Book Adventure reader (K-8) in the U.S. or Canada who is registered on the website with a parent, teacher or guardian. Book Adventure and its contests adhere to the guidelines outlined by CARU and the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.
"Motivation and encouragement are key to reading success," said Kelly Hodge-Williams, Executive Director of the Book Adventure Foundation. "We are delighted Book Adventure can provide readers with such exciting incentives through the Book Bonanza II contest. Already, less than a year after Book Adventure's launch, we have over 185,000 registered users and 670,000 completed quizzes - a number we hope will increase by hundreds of thousands of readers in the coming months!"
